Pregnancy: Week 16

At week 16, your baby’s eyesight is beginning to develop rapidly. He or she may also be developing eyelashes. Right now, your uterus contains approximately 7 ½ ounces of amniotic fluid. The bulge in your belly is also beginning to leave no doubt that you’re pregnant rather than packing on a few extra pounds.

What to Expect with Physiological Development

Even though you shouldn’t expect your baby to begin opening her eyes yet, they are now working. Your baby probably weighs anywhere between 3 and 5 ounces. He’s also likely between 4 and 5 inches in length.

Your baby is also beginning to appear more like a small infant, with eyebrows and eyelashes in the general shape of a small you. Your baby can also hear your voice now.

Your 16 Week’s Ultrasound

Even though your baby isn’t going to actually hear what you’re trying to tell him, he can still hear it. It’s a good idea to begin talking to your baby or even singing. You can sing in the shower if you feel a bit uncomfortable singing elsewhere. If you talk to your baby during the ultrasound, you may actually see some type of reaction.

Another great advantage of the week 16 ultrasound is the possibility of determining the sex of your baby. If you want to know, now is the time to speak to your ultrasound technician about it.

Changes in You

Some women have a difficult time seeing just how much bigger they’re getting during their pregnancy. It’s a good idea to embrace your body’s new shape and not see it as something negative. In fact, every pound you gain during your pregnancy is actually benefiting your baby.

You may also notice it becoming a bit more difficult for you to breathe. That’s because the mucous membrane in your nose will be increasing blood flow, which can increase stuffiness. Don’t expect your doctor to prescribe any medication for this, though.

What You Should Be Doing

Avoid standing in one place for too long. Because the uterus is expanding, it can compress certain blood vessels, increasing the risk of varicose veins. It’s also a good idea to elevate your feet when you sit, stretch continually, and don’t worry too much about some extra bloody noses that may occur.

Ending Week 16

Expect your breasts to continue growing. Some women may begin to feel more tenderness. If anything feels painful or out of sync, it’s a good idea to let your doctor know.
